Pans Labyrinth

Jack Talbot Pans labyrinth 1st scene, Ofelia goes into the labyrinth at night Towards the start of the scene we see Ofelia make her way into the labyrinth. We are immediately given a high angle shot of the girl going past the tree of the labyrinth. This is to show that the girl is not in power, as the tree is directly looking down on her, as it towers above her. This could also have an extended meaning, being that the tree is a natural thing, this could mean that the elements of nature now have the power, instead of the humans. As the girl lowers herself into the entrance of the portal, the camera rises, making the shot a bird's eye shot. This really emphasizes a feeling that the girl is being carefully watched from a distance. The cut from the bird's eye shot to the tracking shot of the girl walking down stairs is a fade. This slower cut may be to show the viewer that the movement and pace of the scene is gradual. Furthermore, the girl contrasts massively in comparison to...
Prisoners clip analysis Towards the beginning of the scene we are presented with a longshot of Jake Gyllenhaal in the restaurant. This shot is used to establish the setting and position of the character. It is from behind which makes the viewer unable to see the facial expressions of him. In the same shot, we see him have a conversation with the waitress about Chinese tradition. This dialogue happens in the same shot, which means the viewer can hear the guy but cannot see his face. It makes him seem less threatening, as in a way, he appears to be more normal than he did. It allows the viewer to predict what he may look like, by judging the sound of his voice. The shot following, is a mid-shot which shows the identity of the person sitting down. The position of the camera and protagonist in relation to the waitress says a lot about his character. The camera is at eye level to the protagonist, which connotes an even feeling towards him. However, he is talking up to the waitress, w...

Wolf of Wall street scene analysis and Social issue in film

Personal response to Wolf of Wall street 1 st sequence/scene analysis The first scene I shall analyse is the scene where Jordan Belfort (Leonardo Dicaprio) is invited to a meal with his boss (Matthew Mcconaughey). The scene takes place in a fancy New York penthouse-like restaurant. It is an interesting scene, as it shows the contrast in characters. Belfort, new to the stock market career, is very hesitant and replies with short answers, and asks direct questions. His sentences don’t flow confidently and he also smiles awkwardly. His slouched rigid posture connotes feelings of uncertainty and a lack of confidence. However, his boss, is loose and free flowing and is not afraid of asking sensitive questions and replying with somewhat shocking answers. When Belfort asks how his boss handles the strains of Wall street, his boss casually responds with “How the hell else would you do this job, Cocaine and hookers my friend.” This laidback persona of the boss makes the viewer feel like...
